Water plays an important role in homes ranging from cleaning uses to drinking and cooking among others. It is also a good source of minerals for animals and human beings. Although there are no known adverse effects of hard water, several studies have shown a relation between various health conditions and hardness of drinking water or some of the hard water minerals.
Common health issues associated to hard water
Cardiovascular disease is one of the health problems related to hard water according to various studies. Although there are no clear explanations of the extent to which various factors relate to the relationship, some studies have established a weak link in men after allowing for socioeconomic and climatic factors. A large-scale study involving 76 municipalities in mid-Sweden found that areas with hard water had low mortality while areas with soft water had high mortality. Although the study did not explain the difference within a certain specific region, experts believe that the differences between the magnesium and calcium content played a major role in the mortality rate difference.
Taiwanese scientists have found a negative association between the various types of cancer including gastric cancer and high levels of magnesium and cancer in water. In another study conducted in Japan, scientists found a link between drinking hard water and colon cancer. Other similar case-controlled studies have also linked drinking hard water to pancreatic cancer and rectal cancer mortality. In Eastern Europe, scientists also found a possible ecological relation between hepatic cancer and exposure to water magnesium.
Central Nervous System Malformations
Scientists believe that environmental influences play a major role in the development of human embryo malfunctions. Although there are no identified markers that clearly explain the link, the mortality statics as a result of the central nervous system malfunction varies greatly among regions. For example, the nervous system malformation in the coal-mining valleys in South Wales is as high as twice the number of cases reported in the coastal plain. Scientists believe that the difference in mortality is because of the presence or absence of elements in the water and the differences in the level of water hardness.
Although there is no clear evidence of how the presence of aluminum in drinking water causes the development of Alzheimer disease, a study conducted in England and Wales found that the risk of Alzheimer disease was about 1.5 times higher in areas with aluminum concentration exceeding 0.11mg/I than in areas with less than 0.01 mg/I aluminum concentration.
